Horizon works to restore the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated to healthy purposeful living through mentoring, education, skill training, and spiritual growth. Horizon brings the larger community into the process of restoring offenders back to society, reducing their recidivism and dependence on government social programs.
Our Vision
The Vision of the Horizon Initiative is to reclaim the person
and recover the soul of the offender, restoring them to life in
the community. We believe this possible through God’s constant
grace and beckoning.
Our Beliefs
Honor, Respect and Dignity are due to each and every human
being not because of their greatness or their acheivements or
how they behave, but because they are home to a soul that is
inherently Holy.
Do no harm - Do good - Stay in love with God
Trauma not Transformed is Transferred
Our Aim
The primary aim of the Horizon Prison Ministry is to
effect an inner transformation of the incarcerated and
prepare them to live with others, in and out of prison, in
mutual support, trust and respect, while increasing
personal and family responsibility and employability well
prior to release. The driving force behind the Horizon
Prison Ministry is collaboration. We unite corrections,
faith and community leaders.
Our Method
The Horizon experience extends over a twelve month period
and is far more intense then any standard prison program.
Each cycle brings forty eight to seventy-two incarcerated men who volunteer for the program into a
modified housing unit. The men come together as a community
in a living and learning environment where participants have
the maximum opportunity for significant personal growth.
Horizon operates 24/7 with a focus on transition
preparation. The men receive mentoring and guidance from
Horizon volunteers and a cadre of resident encouragers.
Each Horizon participant is required to pursue an
aggressive curriculum of educational, spiritual, and
psychological programs with immediate life applications.
Mandatory Horizon programs include Family Life Meetings,
Outside Brothers, Building Community, Victim Awareness, Family Letter
Writing, Character Reformation and Awakening.
Horizon Updates
Horizon Prison Ministry Expands to Chillicothe Correctional Institution (CCI)
Horizon Prison Ministry expanded its program into the
Chillicothe Correctional Institution (CCI) in Chillicothe,
Ohio. The program began transforming lives in July of 2010.
There are presently 72 incarcerated men in the program.
Unique to the program is the fact that 8 graduates of the
Horizon Program at Marion Correctional Institution (MCI) in
Marion, Ohio volunteered and transfered to CCI to serve as
encouragers to the new men participating in the Horizon
program.
